The menu bar in Audacity contains an ‘extra’ menu. This menu has various options for additional functionalities. The selection sub-menu allows you to change the settings to ‘Snap-to’. There are various commands that can extend and contract the selected audio.

Snap-to settings in Selection dropdown
There are eleven options in the selection dropdown menu. All these options perform some changes to the playback or recording. They are as follows:
Snap-to off
To turn the ‘Snap-to’ setting ‘Off’, select this option. The snap-to control is switched off so you can make no changes to snap-to settings. This is the first option in the selection dropdown menu.
Snap-to Nearest
The second option in the dropdown menu is ‘snap-to nearest’. This option turns the ‘Snap-to’ settings of the selection to ‘nearest’.
Snap-to Prior
The snap-to prior option sets the settings of your selection to ‘Prior’. This sets the ‘Snap-to’ settings of the selection.
Selection to start
You might need to select some part of the audio track. This option allows you to select from the current cursor position to the start of the audio track. It is tiresome to go to the extra menu then selection menu then this option, isn’t it? So maybe you can use a shortcut. ‘Shift + Home’ is the shortcut for this option.
Selection to End
This fifth option in the selection menu allows you to select from the current cursor position to the end of the audio track. It is tiresome to follow the complete procedure to apply this option. Shift + End is the shortcut for this option which you can use.
Selection Extend Left
You know you can change the width of the selection of your audio track. To extend the selection to the left direction, choose this option. The size of the previously selected area increases. If you haven’t selected anything, it starts a selection from the cursor position and extends left. The shortcut is Shift + left.
Selection Extend right
Now, you can change the width of the selection of your audio track. To extend the selection in the right direction, choose this option. The size of the previously selected area increases. If you haven’t selected anything, it starts a selection from the cursor position and extends right. The shortcut is Shift + right.
Set Left selection
You can move the cursor position and set the left boundary of your selection. Then, you can draw the selection using the next option. The size of the selection increases and extends towards left as you stop.
Set Right selection
Move the cursor position, and set the right boundary of your selection. Then, you can draw the selection using the ‘Set left selection’ option. The size of the selection increases and extends towards the right as you stop.
Selection contract left
To decrease the size of the selection, you can use this option. This will reduce the size from the left side. Its shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+Right.
Selection contract right
Use this option to decrease the size of the selection from the right side. Ctrl+Shift+Left is the shortcut of this. Click here to learn more.
