For a second, assume that you’ve imported the file and done all the editing that you needed to do. You’ve played it multiple times, and you’re satisfied with the output audio. But now you need to take it to other places to get it heard by others. What to do at this point? Confused? Don’t be. Exporting in Audacity is no rocket science, it is easy. Let us take you through the exporting guide, so, keep on reading.
Export formats in Audacity
Firstly, when exporting, the format is the first question that will come in your mind. Don’t let it rise. Audacity has support for exporting audio in various formats such as WAV, AIF, FLAC, MP2, Ogg Vorbis, etc.
Must you be thinking about exporting the audio in the most common format i.e., MP3? So, to export MP3, you will need to install Lame MP3 encoder in Audacity. It is a simple plug-in, which you’ll find in the FFmpeg installation section. It will contain the FFmpeg library, which includes many other formats such as MP3, WMV, M4A (AAC), AC3, AMR, etc.
Export the Audio files
Whenever you want to export a file, go to the File menu and hover your mouse to the export button. In the expanded section, you’ll see ‘Export Audio.’ A ‘Save as type’ dropdown menu will give you a list of formats. Select the format, and you’re done with the initial step. You’ll be asked for a location, go to the location and save it.
If you’re looking forward to burning a CD, WAVV or AIFF format will work. When you want to export to a CD, make sure the default setting of 44100 Hz, stereo, and 16-bit is applied. While burning a CD, you’ll have options to burn it either as ‘Audio CD’ or ‘Data CD.’ Both options can play CD media on PC, but only the Audio CD option will play media on DVD players or Car-audio.
Multiple and Selected Export Options
Other than exporting a single project or audio file, are you wondering if you want to export multiple data together or selected portion only? There’s an option for those too.
Under the export section, you can select ‘Export selected audio.’ Make a note here that upon choosing this option, Audacity will export the selected sections of all audio tracks (including the greyed out parts).
Similarly, if you’re heading towards exporting multiple audio tracks, select ‘Export Multiple’ from the Export menu. However, upon choosing this option, Audacity will export only the area which is not greyed-out by MUTE or SOLO option. It applies to regular single audio export as well.
It means you’ll get only the portion of audio, which you’ve heard and finalized before deciding to export.
Before using multiple exports, it is better to apply labels via Edit ->Add labels at selection so that audio gets exported in split files.
