Use an Interface

Whether you work with Windows or Linux, you can use an interface to connect various devices to Audacity. Audacity is going to select a particular interface with which it shall communicate. To do this, Audacity is going to make use of the chosen playback and recording devices.

  • You can use the MME, which is the most compatible device on Audacity. It is present in Audacity by default.
  • You can also use Windows Direct Sound. It is more recent, and is less latent.
  • You can use the Windows WASAPI. You can use for performing a loopback activity.
  • If you are a Linux user, you can use the ALSA. It is the only available option on Audacity for Linux.
  • You can use these devices for playbacks ,and recordings as well. These devices ensure the creation of good audio files for the listeners.

Know about the latency

If you want to know about the latency of the devices, you must learn about two important factors. One is the Buffer length and the other is the latency composition.

Buffer refers to a part of an audio waiting to be processed. If you decrease the buffer value, it means that recordings will be laid down, but with less latency. In such cases, you will find the layback responding faster. However, the computer needs to work faster so that other smaller pieces can be processed as and when required.

If you keep this buffer value too low, the system will not be able to cooperate and the actions will stop. You cannot perform recording or playbacks.

As you start recording, you will have to allow the conversion to a digital track sometimes. Audacity will take some time to convert the track into a digital one. If you want to perform a written activity, then its tacking needs some time. This postponement of time is called recording latency. You can provide compensation for such time delays.

You can correctly perform written actions to the tracks relative to the Timeline, and other projects.

Wrapping Up

If you wish to create good audio, you will have to put in effort and time. However, Audacity makes the input of efforts a lot more convenient. You can use these device preferences to make good audio. And, can easily use them to work on the audio files on Audacity, turning them into absolute sensations.
